Dr. Matt Silk is the founding Director of the Ethics of AI Institute (formerly the Ethics of AI Society of Waterloo). He completed his PhD in philosophy at the University of Waterloo and is the co-author of An Inquirer's Guide to Ethics in AI from Broadview Press.
His work focuses on the philosophical, ethical, and political implications of artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on responsibility and inductive risk in emerging technologies. Matt established the Institute to foster interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, computer science, public policy, and civil society.
He is also the host of the Ethics of AI Podcast, has published in academic journals such as AI & SOCIETY, and has written over one hundred ethical analyses for the Prindle Post. He also works more broadly in the philosophy of technology, including the ethics of outer space exploration.
As Director, Matt oversees the Institute's programming, partnerships, and long-term intellectual vision — organizing symposiums, coordinating meetings, and developing public-facing resources on AI literacy and ethical governance. He also works to connect academic research with policy discussions and public education initiatives.
